  • Spain...A Culinary Road Trip

From Mario Batali, superstar chef and author of Molto Italiano and Italian Grill, comes an eating tour throughout Spain with his friend Gwyneth Paltrow.

Spain...A Culinary Road Trip is the companion book to the prime-time public television series Spain...On The Road Again. The premise is simple: Mario Batali and Mark Bittman are single-minded, food-obsessed friends who are constantly on the lookout for the food, wine, and cooking that is unique to Spain--and in this series they will find it. Gwyneth Paltrow and the Spanish actress Claudia Bassols are eager to enjoy all the pleasures the country has to offer, and each pair will be lured into the worlds of the other.

The foursome take the ultimate road trip adventure, showcasing the pleasures of Spain, the country's regional cuisine, art, history, and culture, as they've never been seen before. Hundreds of gorgeous and candid photos, anecdotes, and more than seventy recipes from Mario appear in this scrapbook of the dream vacation through Spain.

    TORTELLONI

Tortellini hails from the vibrant city of Bologna with a curious “history.” Legend has it that Tortellini was created as a tribute to Venus, the goddess of love. When Venus stayed in a tavern on the outskirts of the city, the innkeeper spied on her through the keyhole of her room, but could catch only a glimpse of her navel. Spellbound, he went to the kitchen and, to capture this vision, shaped fresh egg pasta into the navel-sized Tortellini. Here is Mario Batali's own special recipe for tortelloni. Bring the taste of italy home for the holidays!

    Tom and Jerry

The grandfather of American bartending, "Professor" Jerry Thomas, is credited with developing the Tom & Jerry - one of the quintessential wintertime drafts. According to his 1862 publication, "The Bar-Tender's Guide or How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks," this seasonal drink was not to be offered until after the first snowfall. For nearly a century it was a common sight to see a Tom & Jerry bowl in your local watering hole during the Holidays. Despite the close proximity to the Professor's own name, some theorize this drink was named for the characters in Pierce Egan's 1821 book, "Life in London" which chronicles the after-hours roving antics of "Jerry Hawthorn, Esq., and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom." Their relentless pursuit of living the high life, frequently with the aid of an alcoholic beverage, gave birth to the slang, "Tom and Jerrying." It is said that Egan took a recipe, considered a twist on the traditional Egg Nog, and named it the "Tom and Jerry" in order to publicize his book.

    THE ASPHALT CHEF

Fire up your engines! Mario Batali challenged Rachel Ray to the Asphalt Chef Cook-off. Mario, Rachel and Tim Love were paired with race car drivers in a grilling competition that was judged on taste, originality and presentation. "I'm really worried about Mario Batali because I've never competed head-to-head with him," says Rachael, who's cooking with racer Carl Edwards. "I don't know what's going to happen but there's going to be food and cars and a lot of fun." After 20 minutes at the grill, Mario and Juan Pablo Montoya are the winners
